Welcome to the homepage of the Bronx Branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH).
Dr. Carter G. Woodson (1875–1950), pictured below, founded ASALH in 1915. The organization initiated the Journal of Negro History in 1916 and the Negro History Bulletin in 1937, both pioneering periodicals in the field of African American history. In 1926, Dr. Carter was also the leading figure in the establishment of Negro History Week, which corresponded with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln in February. This week eventually grew into Black History Month, the promotion of which is central to ASALH’s mission.
Real education means to inspire people to live more abundantly, to learn to begin with life as they find it and make it better.
